Founded in 1976 as a consulting firm, Sophysa did pioneer work in the development of a new concept of neurological valve to treat hydrocephalus. Introduced on the market in 1984, the SOPHY® valve was the first adjustable pressure valve in the world, and has at last made possible non-invasive adjustment of working pressure to match individual patients' changing conditions.

Since then more than 60,000 Sophysa valves have been implanted throughout the world.

In 1989, Sophysa joined the TOKIBO Group. Administrative and sales functions are located in Orsay, a university town south of Paris, while Production and R&D are based in Besançon, the French capital for micro-mechanics and horological components.

Extensive R&D activities, based on continuous contacts with leading neurosurgeons, ensure that Sophysa remains on the leading edge of shunt valve technology

Sophysa markets its products worldwide through a direct sales force and an exclusive distributor network.

Manufacturing

Sophysa manufactures the following product lines :

neurological implants, consisting of fixed and adjustable pressure valves, reservoirs, catheters and accessories for the treatment of hydrocephalus
ICP monitoring system, consisting of a mini-monitor and intracranial catheters for intracranial pressure monitoring in ICU
implantable access ports and accessories for chemotherapy and pain treatment
Carotid shunts for endarterectomy

Sophysa has developed special know-how in vitreous carbon technology and manufactures, as subcontractor, carbon electrodes for endocardial pacing leads.

All implantable products are manufactured in class 10,000 clean rooms, equipped with class 100 laminar flow workstations.

Both Orsay and Besançon facilities are ISO 9001 / EN 46001 certified since 1996. All products are CE marked.

Distribution

In addition to its own self-manufactured products, Sophysa distributes in France several lines of advanced neurosurgery products. These products are marketed through Sophysa's direct sales network.
